It's 7.30pm. The phone rings. David answers. He listens a while and then turns to me and says "That was someone telling me that they've heard my flat has caught on fire". I grab my car keys and we rush off to David's flat which is about 5 minutes away from the house where we live. As we approach everything looks normal and then we notice that three of the windows are boarded up and there is smoke damage to the outside. There isn't anyone else in the building and David doesn't have keys as he'd lent the flat to a friend for a few days. We're shocked.
We phone a couple of people to see if they know what went on. It appears that one of the other residents got home a few hours earlier, discovered the fire and phoned 999. Four fire engines rushed from around the city and the blaze was under control. The police said that we couldn't get access to the flat until this morning because some of the floorboards had been ripped out by the firemen. Rumours are circulating about how badly the flat is damaged; one person said that the whole flat was gutted while another said everything was alright. We leave the scene and head off to Rutland to pick up the keys and to explain to the Friend who'd been spending a few days there what had happened.
