How did I ever cope without the ability to pause live TV programmes? For over 30 years I've lived in a world where television was unstoppable; if the phone rang or (heaven forbid) someone came round to visit I'd never get to find out the ending of the show I was watching. I'd end up having to wait for the whole series to be repeated and make sure that when the climax was approaching that I'd unplugged the phone and put 'Contaminated Area' signs on the front door.
Enter the wonderful world of Sky Plus. Sky Plus is, for those who don't live in the UK (or who live in a TV-free universe), the hard drive recorder satellite TV system created by BSkyB. It combines well over 100 channels of 'top quality' satellite TV with a built-in hard drive recording facility. Now, if the phone rings I can pause TV and then watch it from where I was interrupted later on. I could also rewind it or go back to the beginning of the show and watch the whole thing again. It's almost impossible to see who I managed to exist without it.
