We're now in the second week of our very own personal Baghdad experience. It's now a week since Bonfire Night and my little part of Leicester continues to reverberate to the bangs and flashes of fireworks every night from dusk until midnight. Tonight itself is Diwali and so there are even more explosions and tremors than usual. Abs and Fitch have spent much of the night hiding upstairs in one of the quieter parts of the house, although judging by some of the bangs they'd need to be in a nuclear bunker to avoid the aftershocks.
Recently a new law came into effect to tighten up on the random use of fireworks; however the law seems to have had completely the wrong effect. In previous years the banging seems to come to a halt around 10 o'clock but this year (with the law allowing fireworks until midnight around Bonfire Night) they're going on much much later.
